Getting Out

Getting out
I stare blankly at the big movie screen. Out of all the people I could have sat by. I ended up sitting by Patty Benson, the most disgusting girl in our school. She reeks of B.O all the time and never brushes her teeth. I hold my breath as long as I can and try to picture she’s not by me. I scoot to the edge of my seat, as far away from her as I can, and cringe. I watch her as she shoves popcorn and candy in her mouth over and over again. I examine her for just a second and see unshaved pits and greasy hair. She makes me want to throw up. She looks at me and smiles. I see gunk all over her twisted teeth. I look away quickly and start watching the movie. As long as she doesn’t touch me I’m fine. I spoke to soon. Just then an arm rested on my shoulder. I shiver and gag at the thought of that thing touching me! I look at her again. She looks happy that she put the move on me. Does she think I enjoy this! I think of any way to get her off without hurting her feelings. I feel her arm adjust and hope she is taking it off, but she doesn’t. I look around to see if anyone is watching. I see my friends snickering. This can’t be more embarrassing! I look around some more to see if there is anyone or anything that can save me! I see nothing. I smell the odor coming from her underarm. I think harder and harder till after what feels like an hour I think of a move to get me out of this. The phone call, it’s a trick my brother always uses to get out of stuff. I touch my cell phone reassuring that it is there to save me. I feel the rectangular shape of it and get relieved. On my phone, when you turn it to vibrate it vibrates to show you what it is. I slip my hand into my pocket secretly. I start pushing the volume button. I have this memorized from doing it many times in school. I push it five times and then wait. I close my eyes tight and hope for it to vibrate. It does. She looks at my pocket and I pull out my phone and pretend to look at it. Then I look at her and say “I got to take this one.” She nods and get up and leave the theater.

Harry!

Harry
“She’s almost done boy” Said Clay’s dad. “Dad, for the last time, it is a he!” Clay sarcastically said back. His Dad slid out from underneath the old car. “Whatever you say” His dad replied with a chuckle. Clay was so excited to drive his first car. Despite the fact that the stick always gets stuck and only one of the doors opens from both the inside and out. “Can I take her for a test spin?” Clay asked. His dad wiped the grease from his hands. “Go for it.” A look of excitement came over Clay’s face. He reached his hand through the window and opened up the driver seat door. He sat down and placed his hands firmly on the wheel. Then with on swift twist of the hand he turned the car on. A cloud of black smoke covered the ground and the roar of the old engine was almost scary. And just like that he was off. He drove down the road a ways and then made a left turn heading for his friend Tim’s house. He pulled into the drive way and honked the horn. Tim and Taylor came running out the door. Tim ran down the stairs with short fast steps while Taylor cleared the whole porch with one jump. They came up to the car and Clay rolled down the window, which wouldn’t roll back up unless you forced it. “She’s a beaut.” Said Tim” “It’s a he” Clay replied while rolling his eyes. Tim laughed. “What’s hiiis name?”
“Harry.”
“Why Harry?”
“Have you ever seen Harry and the Hendersons?”
“Nope” “Oh, well it looks just like the car on that movie."
“Oh I see” Tim said while getting in the car.
Clay laughed and then sped down the road.
Later that night Clay pulled into his driveway and turned off the car. “How was it?” his dad called from the porch. “Awesome!” Clay shouted back. He was very tired after driving around all day and went straight to bed.
The next day Clay woke up and instantly started getting dressed. He was running down the stairs while putting his shirt on. He looked like he was having some troubles. He grabbed his keys then a piece of bread and he was out the door. He started Harry and put it in gear when he noticed the gas was on E. He felt his pockets but only found lint. His pay check wouldn’t come for a couple days and he was out of money.  He thought for a couple seconds then remembered there was some old gas cans in the shed. He sprinted to the shed and saw something that looked like a gas can but was so covered in dust and dirt he couldn’t tell. He lifted it up and then sniffed the nozzle and gagged. It didn’t have that distinct gas smell. It smelled horrid but it would have to do. He started pouring the gas and it came out it all clumpy, like old milk. Then his engine made a noise, almost like a growl. He popped the hood but saw nothing wrong. He then ran around the car to the passenger side, opened up the door and climbed over the consul to the driver’s seat. While crossing his fingers he started the old thing and to his surprise it started. He checked the gas gage and it was full, but he had only put half a can in there. He guessed that old clumpy gas was even better than regular gas. After that he didn’t think much about it and drove to Taylor’s.
“What up man!” Taylor yelled form his lawn. “What’s up T-Cox?” Clay shouted back. He turned off the car and got out.  Later that night Clay got a call from some girls. “Hey, T-Cox!” Clay shouted from Taylor’s room. “Yup” Taylor shouted back from the kitchen”
“You ready to go hang with some chicks!”
“Oh yeah!”
They both ran to the car and hopped in. He started driving when he noticed the car kept gaining speed without him touching the gas pedal. He was going at least 20 over the speed limit and Taylor just kept telling him to go faster. He saw a stop sign up a head and pushed on the break but nothing happened. He then stomped on the break but it once again had no effect on the cars speed. He blew past the stop sign going about 80 and then started to panic! “What are we going to do?!” Clay yelled. Just then a deer jumped out in front of the car. Clay swerved and missed it but over corrected and rolled Harry.
Clay woke up hanging upside down. He kicked the Driver seat door clean off and then climbed out. He stumbled on the road and looked for Taylor. He soon saw him a little ways away from the wreckage. He checked to see if he was alright. “Taylor….. Taylor!” Taylor squinted his eyes opened, “What happened?”
“We crashed man.” Taylor groaned and then got up. The two boys stumbled around for a little bit till they came back to their senses. Clay then picked up his cell phone and started calling his parents. No answer. He then got a hold of Tim and told him where they crashed and to come pick them up. “He’s on his way” Clay told Taylor. “Ok.” Taylor responded. “Why didn’t the brakes work?” Taylor asked.
“I’m not sure… it’s just amazing were not hurt.” Clay and Taylor began to talk a little bit when they heard a noise from the old car. They started walking towards the old car when it flipped back over on its own! It then started speeding towards them! Clay and Taylor both jumped out of the way and then looked at each other. The car turned around. Both boys started sprinting down the road. Taylor was much faster than Clay and got a ways in head of him. Harry then hit clay in the back and sent him flying. Taylor turned around to see what happened. The car then charged at Taylor. The high school running back tried to juke the car but it was coming to fast. He dodged most of it but the car clipped his hip and dropped him. Taylor was helpless and in the middle of the road. The car turned around and sped to finish the job. Just seconds before the car smashed Taylor Clay tackled him off the road. They both hid behind a tree. “What is wrong with that thing?!” Taylor yelled. “I have no clue!” Clay yelled back. Clays head was bleeding and his back ached. Taylor’s hip was smashed and he had to hobble if he wanted to move. Clay peeked from behind the tree but there was no sign of Harry. He saw Tim’s car pull up where they had crashed. Just then clay got a call. It was from Tim. Clay answered and screamed for Tim to get off the road but he was to late. Harry smashed into Tim’s car sending it rolling off the road. Clay started sprinting for the car but it exploded with Tim inside before he could get there. “NO!” Clay screamed. Taylor grabbed him by the shoulder. “Forget him; we need to get out of here. There is a gas station about 2 miles from here. We can make it.” He said. They started running as fast as their injured bodies would let them. They made it a little ways down the road when they heard a car coming. They both looked back to see Harry charging at them. Taylor jumped off the road and hid. Clay froze. Panic had seized him and he couldn’t move. He came to his senses but it was to late to dodge out of the way. Clay made a risky move and jumped on to the hood of the car, rolling over the top and landing behind the car unhurt. Taylor came hobbling back up to Clay. “C’mon lets go” He shouted. They started down the road again when Clay noticed a shortcut he used as a kid. He showed Taylor and they were on a whole different road. When they were about a block away from the store when they saw Harry off in the distances speeding for them. They looked at each other and then started sprinting for the store. Clay and Taylor were about the same speed this time. They ran fast but the car was much faster. It was gaining easily. They were about ten feet from the store with the car dangerously behind them. Just inches before car smashed into them they both dove through the glass doors of the store. The car was to big and got stuck were the door was. Clay was in a ball covering his head from the falling glass. He opened up his eyes that were shut very tight and saw the stuck car. He nudged Taylor and he saw it to. They both got up and stared at the car. Clay looked over and saw the terrified clerk shaking. Without hesitating Clay ripped the hood of the car clean off and then made his way for the battery. He unhooked the battery and ripped it out holding it up as if was his worst enemy’s heart. The car turned off and relief came over both boys. They sat down in the shattered glass and started crying but yet laughing at the same time.
